Halloween Candy Tips for Braces and Invisalign Wearers

Hi, this is Dr. Reynolds at Crescent Orthodontics. I just wanted to give a little shout out before Halloween to give you some tips for success. Kids (and adults) everywhere are going to look forward to a night of ghosts, ghouls and of course, lots of candy! Crescent Orthodontics wants to share how taking the right precautions can bring GREAT Halloween fun for both our braces and Invisalign patients!

Everyone looks forward to celebrating Halloween by digging into a big pile of trick or treating candy. In the office I always tell our patients to find a buddy and do a “candy trade” where they trade their sticky chewies away for the chocolate, softer treats. When it comes to braces not all candy is created equal. While some candies like milk chocolate, soft cookies, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Twix are fine for braces; things that you may want to avoid are things like Skittles, Taffy and Starburst.

Invisalign patients may have a little more freedom but remember to take care of your attachments, as they can fall victim to really hard, sticky things too. The main reason why we want you to avoid any breakage is because it increases your time in treatment. Our goal is to get you in and out of your braces or Invisalign treatment and to your fantastic new smile as quickly as possible!

Another smart tip is to limit the frequency of how often you eat the candy. Every time you eat candy, you’re exposing your teeth to sugars and acids. These can combine with the naturally occurring bacteria in your mouth and with a constant stream, may lead to trouble. The best way to attack your candy pile is to limit the amount of times you dip into it per day. Instead of having a few pieces consistently throughout the day, maybe just choose a window when you can enjoy your candy and always brush after eating it.

Hopefully, you’ve gotten a couple of tips here but the main thing is to have a safe and fun Halloween! We know how hard you work to get that candy and want you to enjoy it! If you have any questions or you have any problems after the holiday, we’re always here to help. Wishing everyone a happy Halloween! Please send us some of your Halloween costumes, we would love to post them on our social media.

Thanks!

Dr. Reynolds.
