Will Invisalign Be Able to Correct My Smile?

Invisalign is a popular option for orthodontic treatment, especially among teens and adults. Some patients are curious about the Invisalign process because it is is different than traditional braces. Dr. Ashley Reynolds of Crescent Orthodontics near Wixom, MI is an expert with Invisalign treatment.
A question for many is “Does Invisalign work better than braces?” Well, the answer is that they work differently but can achieve the same desired effect in certain cases.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a practical alternative to traditional metal braces. Like braces, Invisalign will align and straighten your teeth and will help position your teeth properly for your bite. The clear aligner trays are made from a high-quality thermoplastic material that will slowly move your teeth into place over time. Because they’re completely transparent, they disguise well and nobody will know that you’re wearing them. The aligners will need to be worn for no less than 23 hours a day, taking them out to eat, clean, brush, and floss. Approximately every two weeks, you’ll change your aligners to a new pair that are slightly different from the last.

The Process

Invisalign is just as effective as braces for treating gapped or crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, and open bites. There are some cases (like malocclusions, crossbites, etc.) that only metal braces can tackle. Consult with your orthodontist to determine if Invisalign is right for you.

If your orthodontist determines that you are a candidate for Invisalign, then you are ready to start your treatment. Your orthodontist will create a personalized treatment plan using 3-D images of your teeth with X-rays, cast plaster impressions, and pictures of your mouth.

A computer program then plots the gradual course your teeth will move in and creates sets of aligners that correspond with the intended movement of your teeth. Each aligner can move your teeth anywhere from .25 to .33 millimeters. Treatment with Invisalign typically takes a little more than a year’s time. Once your orthodontic treatment is over, your orthodontist will give you a retainer to wear at night.

Costs

The costs of both traditional metal braces and Invisalign depend on the individual patient and how much work they need done. Check with your health or dental Insurance plan for information on coverage for orthodontic procedures.

Dr. Ashley Reynolds and the team at Crescent Orthodontics will be able to tell you exactly how much your treatment will cost after all of the factors are taken into consideration.
